Luiz Lavos: Smooth Rhodesian with Horn Tobacco Pipe
Product Number: 002-881-0049
Leveraging a background in graphic arts and woodworking, Brazilian carver Luiz Lavos fashions a wide range of eclectic shapes that are singular in look and execution, with this Rhodesian being one such shape. A curvaceous interpretation of the classic form, this piece boasts a consistent undercurve and fluid outline. Up front, a stocky bowl stands atop a lifted heel and grows thick walls that terminate at a broad, ridgeline-wrapped waistline. From there, these walls take on a sudden taper, rounding out the bowl's upper section and terminating at a taut rim that overlooks a modest tobacco chamber. The entirety of the bowl boasts a dramatic forward cant that keeps the shape looking dynamic, especially when coupled with the aft's sweeping build. A wide transition follows the bowl and marks the start of an upturned shank extended by a long ferrule of flaring horn. This ferrule draws the eye along the pipe's aft to the mouthpiece, which takes on a gentle downturned arc and promotes a comfortable smoking posture. A smoky, contrast-rich smooth finish dresses the ensemble and highlights a gorgeous showing of grain throughout the stummel.
