Manduela: Smooth Bulldog with Bone Tobacco Pipe

Product Number: 002-747-0001

It's quite easy to see some Poul Ilsted influence in this Bulldog from Manduela. The clean lines of the paneled, or faceted, diamond shank and the strong leading ridge cutting across the underside are both signature Ilsted cues, but to describe any of Manduela's pipes solely in terms of stylistic similarities to her mentor would not only be remiss, but pretty uninteresting as well. Manduela has developed and curated her own unique style over the years, you see, and it's an aesthetic that very much speaks for itself.

For one, the precision and detail she's put into each and every line of this piece (and there are many) is just astonishing. From the stepped beadline along the sharply beveled rim, to the striking taper of the bowl itself, to the continuity created by extending the lines of the shank across the entire underside, Manduela has created a very modernist sort of Bulldog shape, very bold in its silhouette yet charming to boot. Fittingly, she's finished it in a similarly bold style: a high-contrast, bengal stain for the stummel, a thin bone accent, and a firm-lined mouthpiece of hot-pink-and-deep-blue brindled vulcanite.
