Manduela: Smooth Bent Stack with Bone
Product Number: 002-747-0025
Prior to becoming a pipe maker, Manduela Riger-Kusk spent many hours practicing bass guitar with the hopes of one day performing at Denmark's annual Roskilde Festival, which features several international music acts. While that unfortunately did not happen, Manduela eventually became one of the world's most famous and respected artisan pipe makers. She had always enjoyed pipe smoking and began with corn cobs, but soon she wanted a better pipe. The pieces she liked were too expensive so she dreamed of one day making a pipe herself. While working at a museum in Svendborg, Manduela learned that Poul Ilsted lived in the town and went to go visit, insisting that Ilsted teach her how to make pipes. After years of learning from Ilsted and carving pieces at Pipe-Dan, Manduela gradually developed her own distinctive style and crafts some of the most sought-after pipes in the world.
This boldly proportioned bent Stack wonderfully showcases how Manduela reinterprets traditional shapes through her own creative lens. The tall, deep-chambered bowl displays a subtle taper from its robust heel up toward the rim, with tight streaks of vertical grain rising along the flanks. The transition is slightly angled and introduces the gently rising shank, its end accented by a pale bone band. Bone is one of Manduela's favorite accenting materials and is used to great effect on this piece, standing out in stark contrast against the stummel's mahogany contrast stain and the half-saddle stem's jet-black hue. For those who prefer larger pipes that can provide long smoking sessions but also desire a brilliantly executed artisan composition, this piece from Manduela is everything one could want.- Jeffery Sitts
