Manduela: Smooth Billiard with Silver Tobacco Pipe
Product Number: 002-747-0041
While she's well known for the firm, architectural designs inspired by her mentor, Poul Ilsted, Manduela's impeccable shaping acumen also extends to more classically-oriented pieces as seen in this piece. As she foregoes her signature facet work, she showcases her versatility as an artisan pipe maker with this straightforward Billiard rendition. Even so, her efficient, minimalist approach to shaping makes itself known, the design exuding a confident demeanor without the need for any excessive flourishes. The composition sees a pert, upright bowl posed at the fore, formed by slim, supple walls that curve gently as they rise from the softened heel toward the flat rim, the overall figure contouring well to the hand. Showcasing the carver's pristine line work, an arrow-straight shank-and-stem join to the bowl out back, the arrangement composed of a lithe shank and tapered stem for a sleek, streamlined profile. Furthermore, the shank's slenderness accentuates the bowl's curves just a touch, emphasizing the softer character of this design. Tying together this piece's traditional appeal, the stummel wears a smooth auburn finish that highlights lively grain across the briar, with the junction adorned by a bright silver accent band for a dose of flash.
