Mark Tinsky: Black and Tan Lovat (5) (OGB)
Product Number: 002-035-0562
Though quite a lengthy rendition of the Lovat, this piece's bowl size is on the smaller end of Mark Tinsky's shaping spectrum, forgoing the bold, Italian neoclassic aesthetic that often accompanies the American carver's pipes. Slightly forward-canted, the bowl balances out the shank extended length, and the finish here draws further focus to the piece's various elements — a dense, craggy rustication covers the shank, while the bowl is left smooth to display streaks of flame grain. Typically, the Black and Tan series adds further contrast via a dark stain on the rustication, but here, Tinsky has kept the stummel's palette consistent, the only contrast coming from the black stem and its creamy accent.-Truett Smith
