Mark Tinsky: Black and Tan Cauldron with Black Palm Accents (5) (One Star)

Product Number: 002-035-0850

The Cauldron is a shape I more often think of in connection with Italian pipe makers, but American carver Mark Tinsky executes it well here. The bulbous heel I expect is present, the bowl sweeping upward into a pinched waist and a broad, flared rim. Black palm accents adorn the underside and top of the flared rim, as well as the stem base, adding a dark, mysterious element. Tinsky doubled down on that aesthetic, using a black and tan contrast stain to accentuate sweeping flame grain and present a unified profile. The shank lifts slightly upward and is paired to a lithe saddle stem of black acrylic that turns downward for a comfortable smoke. It's a dark beauty, ready to add it's sinuous profile to a lucky collector's rotation.
