Mark Tinsky: Root Bent Pot with Leopardwood Christmas 2021 (Two Star)
Product Number: 002-035-0929
Mark Tinsky's annual Christmas pipe release is nothing short of a tradition, with the American carver having produced this line since 1983. Comprising a singular shape outfitted with a myriad of different finishes, Tinsky's celebratory smoker for 2021 is this handsome, stout, bent Pot. The bowl is broad and squat and allows for easy holding or cradling in the hand, and the chamber that it holds is quite capacious, its thick, insulating walls sure to keep the hand comfortable. The shank and stem that flow out from the transition are relatively svelte, with all of the bend taking place at the stem, while the shank stays straight. Overall, the construction here is quite muscular, though the litheness of the rear end, and the lifted heel's addition of some extra verticality keep the character of this pipe quite jocular, solidifying it as a comfort pipe. This particular example is dressed in Tinsky's mahogany-stained Root finish and is accented by various bands of leopardwood: one inlaid into the stem base, one surrounding the bowl just below the rim, and one inlaid into the rim, surrounding the chamber.-John McElheny
