Peter Matzhold: Smooth Scoop
Product Number: 002-290-0277
One of the most identifiable characteristics of Peter Matzhold's work is his remarkably clean compositions and designs. Often incorporating strong architectural themes, his linework is strong, refined, and elegant. Yet he always seems to balance that firmer style with contrasting, smooth, continuous curves. In this Scoop, we find exactly that: a beautiful, symbiotic relationship between firm, sharp lines along the paneled shank and ridge of the falling rim and an effortless, uninterrupted curve flowing across the underside. The latter works not only to soften those aforementioned hard lines, but to give the otherwise architectural piece a strong sense of forward motion — without resulting to the typical, strong forward cant and overtly dynamic stance you'll often find in other pipe makers' work. What's most striking about this piece, in fact, is its minimalism: beautifully elegant from fit to finish.- Andrew Wike
