Peter Matzhold: Smooth Bent Billiard with Boxwood
Product Number: 002-290-0278
Even in his more architectural forms, Peter Matzhold's work is defined by its powerful minimalism. That's not to say we haven't seen many freehands from the Austrian maker, only that even those pieces have been beautifully executed with a clean and refined sense of line and curve. This barely bent Billiard is a wonderful example of this elegance; the most complex aspect of the form itself, after all, is the stepped boxwood accents along the shank end and stem base. Matzhold's work, then, is less about pushing the boundaries of pipe design, but executing each form as precisely and gracefully as possible. Like a master cellist performing Bach's Cello Suite No.1, he not only hits every note perfectly, but does so while pouring his very soul into each pass of the bow. This is certainly one rendition that's sure to be a classic for years to come.
