Peter Matzhold: Smooth Brandy with Boxwood
Product Number: 002-290-0281
This Brandy from Peter Matzhold is a curious one. Though seemingly arrow-straight, it's a shape very much exhibiting an ample display of curvature, with nary a surface to be found that doesn't sport some manner of curve, whether gentle or more extreme. For the gentle, there's the delicately turned stem-base, leading the eye to the crisply flaring fishtail bit. As for the less gentle, though still often overlooked, there's the rounded, cylindrical shank, which leads the eye rapidly to the more extreme, in the form of the generously-rounded, gradually tapered Brandy bowl. And in the spirit of subtlety, Peter has adorned this classic fellow with a two-tone boxwood and vulcanite stem base, which, when paired with the boxwood accent, lends the overall composition a graceful sense of unity. It's quite a clever trick, and a perfect example of the carver's use of detail to achieve a masterful design.
