Peter Matzhold: Smooth Long Shank Bent Brandy with Horn
Product Number: 002-290-0285
While the bowl of this bent Brandy from Peter Matzhold is rather classically Danish, with a lifting gesture to its heel and its weight set low, the base providing a pleasing plumpness in hand, there's a good deal of sinuous gesture to this piece as a whole. The lengthy, trim shank and its soft upward curve are lithe and gentle, creating a lightness to the overall form that seems to enhance the bowl's gentle taper. A trim ring of horn at the stem-base allows the lines at play to come to a satisfying conclusion as it shifts to the mouthpiece's soft downturn. It's a testament to Peter's careful shaping, while the lively display of grain around the stummel, highlighted in a vivid contrast stain, nods to his skill at finding the best in a given block of briar.
