Peter Matzhold: Smooth Volcano with Boxwood
Product Number: 002-290-0286
With a degree and former career in architecture, Peter Matzhold brings a clean-lined, geometric aesthetic to his pipemaking, and no shape is better suited to such a creative style than the Volcano. A broadly splayed shank defines this piece, likening its aerial silhouette to that of a slightly trimmer take on the Eskimo design. A crisp ridgeline then separates heel from bowl and results in a firmly protruding base at the shape's fore. Continuing this sense of rigidity, Matzhold has paneled the edges of the shank, the plane's bands flaring suddenly and connecting at the shank-end — a subtle but deft touch that does well to marry the design elements together and draw the eye to the base of the saddle stem. Here, Peter has fashioned it with an inlaid ferrule of boxwood to comprise the lower half of the saddle. It's a subtle, simple accent, but one that testifies to Matzhold's craftsmanship and artistic eye. Stunning grain matches the piece's handsome profile: A band of cross grain bisects the top of the shank, resulting in needle prick freckles of birdseye all along the bowl's flanks. Underneath, though, you'll find a tiger-striped display of flame grain completely covering the broad surface, highlighted by a gorgeous contrast stain.-Truett Smith
