Micah Redmond: Sandblasted Blowfish
Product Number: 002-774-0023
Based on our archives, this is the first Blowfish shape we've seen from Micah Redmond. Regardless, he's knocked it out of the park. Though it's been sandblasted, the traditional grain pattern is still clearly evident, with raised droplets of birdseye dotting the flanks and crisp cross grain sweeping around the middle of the bowl.
While hewing to the traditional aspects of the Blowfish shape, Redmond has, at the same time, made the piece his own, imbuing it with a unique sense of proportion. The shank is lent some extra briar and a generous flare at its end, while the transition is pinched for a streamlined aerial profile. Such features make the piece's overall size difficult to discern from the pictures alone, and the playful use of proportions is a common convention among Micah's work. All in all, it's a thoroughly unique piece from the American carver, displaying a sense of whimsy while also adhering to the shape's classic style and testifying to Micah's skill in the workshop.-Truett Smith
