Micah Redmond: Sandblasted Tomato with Bakelite and Boxwood
Product Number: 002-774-0028
It can safely be said that Micah Redmond's Tomato renditions are among the American artisan's most signature shapes. Offered here is an especially "speeding" version of the design, foregoing Micah's typically robust proportions for a form that's quite dynamic and streamlined. Much of this is attributed to the long shank here, curling slightly and tapering subtly from the domed saddle stem to the stretched transition. With a steeply canted aft line, the bowl urges forward, the rim tilted in relation to the bulging waistline to accentuate the implied momentum. It also offers an easy feel in hand as the thumb sits nicely at the transition to allow the forefinger to wrap the front of the bowl. Redmond took notice of this, dressing it in a subtly textured sandblast for even more tactile appeal. Accented with a band of boxwood at the shank-end, the black stain contrasts handsomely against the caramel-swirled bakelite stem and walnut-stained, chamfered rim.-Truett Smith
