Micah Redmond: Partially Sandblasted Tomato
Product Number: 002-774-0031
Micah enjoys playing with compact, extra-chubby forms when carving pipes, contrasting the plump proportions and stout substance of a shape against its overall diminutive size. His signature Tomato shape is an excellent example, defined by a low-set, broad bowl and compact shank and stem combination. In this particular Tomato, however, Micah steps somewhat outside the design cues of his signature rendition. While this piece still displays the American carver's penchant for compactness and muscularity, Redmond has focused here on asymmetry and quite a flowing sense of line.
When viewed from above, the form's inherent asymmetry becomes readily apparent: The bowl is oblong and tilted toward the right, while the chamber sits slightly off-center in relation to the smooth-polished rim. Furthermore, the shank is shaped asymmetrically, counterbalancing the bowl's tilt. Flaring toward the stem and lenticular of cross section, the shank is tilted downward to the right, the right side's ridgeline traveling further into the bowl than the one of the left side. As such, from an aerial vantage point, the bowl's left flank and the left side of the shank curl in toward each other, while the opposite sides turn away from one another.
It all creates a stunning sense of visual movement and dynamic interplay within the composition, yet in contrast, the finish remains quite restrained and minimalist, focused solely on highlighting concise ripples of ring grain. Such a conservative color palette fits in well to the American Industrial style of pipemaking, which prioritizes proportions and shaping over particularly flashy stains (though bright stem colors might be used in some cases). Such a combination of rounded form, asymmetry, and upward flicking shank also call to mind the work of Cornelius Mänz, with Micah here combining his own creativity with the design cues we've seen utilized by the German carver.-Truett Smith
