Micah Redmond: Sandblasted Bent Egg
Product Number: 002-774-0032
Somewhat recently Micah Redmond made an Oom Paul as a commission. It's since inspired the American artisan to experiment with other deeply bent designs, and while we obviously weren't able to get our hands on the Oom Paul commission, we have this bent Egg to drool over, witnessing the results of Micah's playful imagination as he reinterprets bent forms. Unlike the firm, stolid shape of an Oom Paul, this Egg is defined completely by smooth curves and a chubby disposition throughout — the heel's arc round and consistent and the transition gentle, stout, and considerably high-set. With a good bit of forward cant to the bowl, such momentum balances the muscular proportions, keeping the profile quick and lighthearted yet still with plenty of substance. What makes this piece an especially well-balanced composition, though, is the domed base of the saddle stem and how it echoes both the curve of the heel and implied lines of the bowl were they not interrupted by the rim. An incredibly comfortable jaw-hanger, this smoker is compact at not even four inches in length, yet it houses a comparatively generous chamber within the bowl, wearing a delightfully concise tanblast.-Truett Smith
