Micah Redmond: Sandblasted Acorn
Product Number: 002-774-0033
Looking through Micah Redmond's portfolio, you might be tempted to say that the array shapes represented the work of two different carvers. The American carver vacillates between two rather different aesthetics — one marked by chubby, compact forms, the other manifested in a more lengthy, dynamic style. This particular Acorn falls closer within that latter category. Though the bowl is comfortably plump, seeming to inflate from out of the transition, the overall profile remains lithe and curvaceous through the shank and stem. The shank tapers subtly toward the transition, accentuating the bowl's forward-urging cant and the silhouette's dynamic momentum as a whole. Micah has dressed it in a rather conservative color palette of jet-black stem and slightly contrasted stain, allowing the hair-thin ripples of ring grain to capture all the attention. One of my favorite aspects of this piece, however, is the shank and stem junction: Instead of fitting flush, the shank face is slightly indented, with the saddle stem base set within, the resulting overhang perfectly echoing the flaring, disc-like shaping of the top of the stem base — an impressively subtle compositional element.-Truett Smith
