Micah Redmond: Sandblasted Tomato with Bakelite
Product Number: 002-774-0034
A unique take on Micah Redmond's signature Tomato, this rendition caters to his reputation for stout, compact pipes while adding some subtle flourishes and is reminiscent of the "OR05" shape Micah created for BriarWorks. It also shares several design cues in common with this other Tomato we received from Micah. Both play with an abbreviated shank and stem combination, and while this piece doesn't curl as much through the transition, its shank face is similarly tilted like that of the other. Such a tilt adds the slightest hint of asymmetry to the form, accentuated further by the flanks of the shank flicking outward. The bowl itself remains consistently rounded and prioritizes breadth over height to provide thick insulating walls. Micah's work often falls within the American Industrial style which is often defined by hearty proportions and a more minimalist approach to finishing. The dark, conservative sandblast of the stummel fits in well to this aesthetic, but Redmond has added an accenting dose of color via a stem of limoncello bakelite. The contrasting colors make for a stark, dual-toned presentation that captures the attention, drawing one's focus to the supple shaping and concise grain patterns.-Truett Smith
