Micah Redmond: Smooth Tomato with Bakelite Tobacco Pipe
Product Number: 002-774-0037
The Tomato is one of Micah Redmond's signature shapes, the American carver having produced several renditions over the years that vary in their length and often display Micah's penchant for striking color palettes. As a part of the BriarWorks team, his "OR05" Tomato has been a popular design from the Nashville workshop, combining a compact length with robust proportions. This particular piece fits well into Redmond's portfolio of stout, stubby designs and can easily be slipped into a pocket thanks to its nosewarmer length. Despite its small size, the bowl's remarkably rotund, with the hearty, abbreviated shank matching the bowl's chubby disposition. The transition is brief, almost non-existent and accentuates the bowl's supple curves and the piece's pocket-friendly size. While it wears a smooth finish, a patch of plateau travels along the stummel's underside, adding some textural diversity to the composition and accentuating the shape's inherent organicism. The warm mahogany stain handsomely highlights the briar's natural grain, while the pale Bakelite mouthpiece stands out in stark contrast. It's one of Micah's more understated renditions, yet perfectly exemplifies his distinctive style.- Jeffery Sitts
