Micah Redmond: Sandblasted Bent Brandy
Product Number: 002-774-0038
Micah Redmond's work has consistently demonstrated an appreciation for plump, pocket-friendly proportions with his Apple and signature Tomato renditions serving as prime examples. This bent Brandy continues that tradition, merging the supple curves and sweeping line work of Danish pipemaking with the muscularity and robustness of the American Industrial style. It's the first bent Brandy we've received from Redmond, yet perfectly fits in with the American carver's portfolio of stout, dynamic shapes.
While it's certainly a full-bodied Brandy design, what immediately struck me was the overall cohesion of this piece. The bowl's heartiness carries on into the stubby shank with the base of the stem again echoing that theme before ending in a gentle downturn. The stem also expertly continues the arching nature of the shank while its domed base seamlessly mimics the chubbiness of the bowl and shank. The American artisan has then finished the stummel in a crisp sandblast, its black stain color coordinating with the vulcanite mouthpiece while the smooth, inflated rim is stained a walnut hue for some subtle contrast. Though this composition is on the more reserved end for Micah, it bespeaks his talent as a carver and demonstrates his love of classic forms.- Jeffery Sitts
