Micah Redmond: Smooth Tomato

Product Number: 002-774-0048

Micah Redmond began making pipes as a hobby and quickly become engrossed in the craft, visiting and receiving help from Premal Chheda as he honed his skills. He became a full-time pipe maker at BriarWorks in 2015, and now makes artisan pips under his own name. His Tomato shape is one of his signature creations, and he has developed several popular variations on the basic design such as this charming Nosewarmer iteration. In compact dimensions, with a squat, elongated bowl, high-kicking shank and well-bent saddle stem of hand-cut vulcanite, it offers a pocket-friendly smoke and delightful in-hand presence. Dressed in a warm mahogany stain and smooth finish, the vertical grain on this piece is tightly packed and, to put it mildly, extraordinary. A field of birdseye covers the rounded heel, so dense that I literally said "wow" when I first saw it. Flame grain rises in uniform striations all around the bowl as well as the shank's flanks, leading to more intricate whorls of birdseye on the upper surfaces. The pipe's aesthetic is one of concentrated beauty, with so much to love in such a small package that it is difficult to put down.
