Michael Parks: Smooth Prince with Horn (VI.16) (Maple Leaf) Tobacco Pipe
Product Number: 002-473-0067
Michael Parks is perhaps best known for two things: modernized takes on classic English shapes and excellent sandblasts. What many folks tend to overlook, however, is just how talented the Canadian carver is with a smooth polish. Just take a look at this gorgeous Prince. The overall shaping is very much on par with his modern classic approach, resulting in a ideal interpretation of the age-old design with a plump, softly rounded bowl set to a proportionally slender shank and even trimmer style of mouthpiece. Now Michael could've lent it one of his extra craggy, deep sandblasts, but given the form's smooth, supple shaping and elegant lines, that likely would've compromised much of what makes this particular piece so enjoyable. So Michael kept things smooth and reserved. In fact, he took it one further and really let that charming shaping speak for itself — keeping the briar dark and glossy and using just a trim mount of dark horn to accent.
