Michael Parks: Smooth Magnum Cup and Saucer (VII.16) (Maple Leaf) Tobacco Pipe

Product Number: 002-473-0068

As the "Magnum" stamp indicates, this is an exceptionally large piece from Michael Parks. While many artisans craft briars of this size as private commissions, I suspect Michael actually had an artistic reason for pressing the scale so far here. Simply put, it has allowed him to more clearly showcase the intricate and exciting form of this "Cup and Saucer."

Something of a mix between a stout-walled Apple and the more forward-rushing Scoop shape, it captures its still-life inspiration quite well, featuring a plump, rounded bowl (the cup) seemingly perched atop a broad, outstretched, Scoop-like base (the saucer). The two aren't actually segmented physically, yet Michael's handling of the pronounced, stepped ridge — flowing from the top of the transition down to the jutting heel of the bowl — has created one such illusion. Of course, another perk to crafting pipes of this scale is simply more briar throughout, and therefore more grain to show off. Suffice to say, there's plenty of beautiful flame covering this massive piece.
