Michael Parks: Partially Sandblasted Cobra Horn with Mammoth (V.MA.17) Tobacco Pipe
Product Number: 002-473-0076
A more avant-garde sort of design compared to his English classical fare, here Michael Parks has put an interesting spin on the Danish Cobra design — not by adding complexity but by streamlining and pairing down the entire theme to its bare bones. Starting out with a plump, softly rounded Egg bowl, set to a deep forward cant, Michael's worked the cross-section into a subtle eye-shape with lenticular flanks — the defining ridges of which flow effortlessly down through the transition and into the same along either side of the oval shank. Moreover, he's made that division even clearer through a mixed finish, polishing the fore of the bowl silky smooth to showcase some brilliant birdseye against a dark contrast, while lending the rest of the stummel a crisp, low-profile, near jet-black sandblast. The overall effect is quite slimming in profile, accentuated even further by swapping out the typical elongated S-curve associated with the shape for an arrow-straight shank and stem, giving the whole piece an almost Belge-like silhouette overall. Beautiful work.
