Michael Parks: Smooth Blowfish with Buckeye Burl (VI.17) Tobacco Pipe
Product Number: 002-473-0081
Quite a contrast to the Swan Neck Billiard also featured in this batch, here Michael Parks has hit pause on his re-imagined English classical style and proceeded full steam ahead with a striking Japanese design. And quite frankly, he killed it. In fact, this might be one my favorite renditions of the Blowfish I've seen. It's tight-knit with a bundled-up sense of energy like a Fugu, yet absolutely packed with complex linework. It's playfully asymmetrical in the Tokutomi-esque cross-section, yet the whole silhouette just has a streamlined look to it — a product of both its dual finish and the elongation Michael's lent to the flanks.
While all that shaping has me turning it over and over in my hand, the real star of this show is the grain. Every line, every facet, ever three-dimensional plane was carefully considered with the block's natural pattern in mind. The result? Well, just flip through the photos. Beautiful doesn't even come close to describing this one.
