Mike Sebastian Bay: Smooth Bent Brandy
Product Number: 002-820-0041
Mike Sebastian Bay spent extensive time training under Tom Eltang in Tom's workshop, honing his talent as a carver as well as learning much about shaping, finishing, and stem work. Stylistically, Eltang rubbed off on Bay, and this bent Brandy displays a slight likeness to Tom's work in its classic Danish form, minimalist aesthetic, and plump roundness combined with sleek dynamism. That said, Mike has made this particular design all his own — the shank-and-stem combination flare elegantly into the transition, the underside continuing into the heel to prompt supple cheeks about the lower bowl. Such a fluid line urges the bowl forward and lifts the heel, implying a high degree of inherent momentum to belie the bowl's plumpness and make for quite the fast-paced piece. A stunning example of gorgeous Danish shaping, it's all dressed in a traditional contrast stain, highlighting windswept flame grain and birdseye alike.-Truett Smith
