Mike Sebastian Bay: Rusticated Apple with Bamboo
Product Number: 002-820-0048
This straight Apple from Mike Sebastian Bay pays homage to Bay's mentor Tom Eltang, with the elder Dane's signature, undulating dark rustication and lithe dimensions as well as a pale bamboo shank extension. Originally Eltang's apprentice, Bay now makes pipes under his own name and is building quite a reputation for quality and fine craftsmanship. This iteration makes it easy to see why his reputation is so good, as the fit and finish inside and out display excellent attention to detail.
The dark rustication is contrasted by smooth, lighter stained briar at the inflated rim and transition, the latter of which is shaped perfectly to mirror the undulations of bamboo that stretch out back. The wave-like profile is continued from bamboo to stem, the profile maintained with a curving shoulder before narrowing to a svelte saddle bit just before the lip button. The dimensions of this pipe are quite compact, placing it in striking range of Nosewarmer length, and with an incredibly light weight of 20 grams it will be an excellent clencher.- Joel Balyeat
