Mike Sebastian Bay: Smooth Brandy with Bamboo

Product Number: 002-820-0052

Mike Sebastian Bay's pipe-making journey began when he traveled across Denmark to find someone to repair his father's pipes. Fortune smiled on him, when he found Tom Eltang, and he eventually became Eltang's apprentice. Mike now crafts pipes under his own name, with examples like this fine straight Brandy showing the lineage of quality and design cues one would expect form his mentor. In keeping with the Danish school of pipe design, this Brandy displays a softness to the plump heel and tapered walls of the shape, as well as a discretely inflated rim.

Smooth sides and a rich auburn stain bring out stunning flame grain with a striking contrast, drawing my eye into the stummel's beauty and holding tight. The shank is a lithe, abbreviated section, shaped to begin a profile of undulating waves seamlessly continued by a thin black ring and two knuckles of pale bamboo. The profile continues apace through a another thin accent at the shank end, flowing without interruption into the beginning of a vulcanite saddle stem. The fit and finish inside and out show Bay's attention to detail, and combine with a very light weight to make this a finely-wrought clencher that will elevate any collection.
