Mike Sebastian Bay: Rusticated Bent Apple with Bamboo

Product Number: 002-820-0054

We rarely get the pleasure of receiving a bent Apple shape from Mike Sebastian Bay; in fact, according to our archives, this is only the fourth ever and is a remarkably svelte rendition. Having apprenticed under fellow Dane and legendary artisan Tom Eltang, Bay has previously produced plump, cheeky designs yet offers here a more sleek, lithe iteration that reminds me of a Prince. A plump bowl displays an Eltang signature black rusticated finish, incorporation of the easily recognizable waves granted by the elder carver to Bay, framed between an inflated and smooth shank dressed in a warm contrast stain. The aesthetic is visually and physically appealing, a delight to the eyes, and a stimulating presence in hand.

The delight does not end with the bowl, as Bay has created a work of art in an often-overlooked pipe section, the shank. Like waves racing towards the shore, peaks and valleys rise and fall in perfect harmony from shank transition to the very downturn of the saddle stem. The profile remains matched as the material graduates from briar to a black accent band, then two knuckles of bamboo, before finishing in the black vulcanite of the stem base. An exquisite pipe with a storied pedigree, this Danish piece will make a deserving centerpiece for any collection.
