Mike Sebastian Bay: Smooth Acorn with Buffalo Horn
Product Number: 002-820-0060
The soft, gestural shaping of Danish design is readily evident in this Acorn from Mike Sebastian Bay, which should come as no surprise since the Danish artisan apprenticed under Tom Eltang. The bowl displays the flared flanks and softy tapered upper portion expected from the shape, as well as a softly upturned shank. Bay has incorporated the briar's natural plateau into the rim, for an organic aesthetic that makes me feel this pipe was grown rather than crafted.
Brilliant flame grain rises in concert with he bowl, made unmissable by one of Mike's warm auburn stains and a sleek, smooth finish. A thin black accent ring on the shank provides a base for a mount of dark buffalo horn, the seamless use of alternate material looking quite natural here. A standard mortise and tenon arrangement joins the downturned saddle stem of jet-black vulcanite, with a thin expansion ring adding extra elegance.- Joel Balyeat
