Mike Sebastian Bay: Smooth Volcano with Mammoth
Product Number: 002-820-0061
Mike Sebastian Bay is a Danish pipe artisan who began is career when he met Tom Eltang, soon after apprenticing in Tom's workshop in Copenhagen. The two develop a close bond working side by side, and while Bay's work displays his own distinct style, his roots are always apparent. This stunning piece is a great example of the precision and artistic detail he imbues his pipes with, a forward-urging Volcano replete with a concave fore, convex aft, and a wrapping ridgeline at the heel that manages to display cheeking in ways I have never seen before. The bespoke appeal continues on the shank's lower margins, with flanking ridgelines evolving from the pipe's heel evoking in cross section the Volcano bowl's crisp base.
Bay has shaped masterfully according to the grain, showing off the briar's flame grain with a smooth finish and bright contrast stain. The stummel is crowned by a pale accent of mammoth, adding even more contrast to the piece and providing a nice visual break from the mouthpiece. The stem is a lithe, hand-cut vulcanite affair, gently bending down as it widens to a just-right fishtail button. A remarkable pipe, sure to elevate even the most distinguished collection.- Joel Balyeat
