Mike Sebastian Bay: Smooth Bent Dublin with Horn
Product Number: 002-820-0063
Mike Sebastian Bay began his pipe-making journey when he contacted Tom Eltang for help in restoring some of his father's old pipes. Bay ended up apprenticing under Eltang, learning the intricacies of the craft and what makes a pipe not just functional, but also beautiful. Bay took everything he learned from Eltang and began to craft pieces under his own name, producing lightweight, compact designs with the soft features and elegant line work that often mark the Danish style. This bent Dublin is a refined, sophisticated rendition of the classic shape and showcases Bay's impeccable approach to shaping and finishing.
This piece features a pert, affable bowl with a flared, softly inflated rim and a stern taper to the plump, rounded heel. The subtle lift of the heel lends the bowl a forward-ebbing momentum, while the sinuous, curling nature of the shank-and-stem combination offers a gestural note to the pipe's profile. The jet-black color of the vulcanite complements the warm, auburn stain that dresses the stummel, with an accent of genuine horn at the junction lightening the overall composition. The luxurious smooth finish that dresses the stummel showcases some handsome, tidy strands of flame grain across the flanks of the bowl and stunning birdseye across the rim. Lightweight and offering a comfortable, well-balanced fit in hand, this piece is an impressive example of quality craftsmanship, and it should make an eye-catching addition to any collector's rotation.--Davin Hylton
