Mike Sebastian Bay: Rusticated Lovat Tobacco Pipe

Product Number: 002-820-0072

Mike Sebastian Bay's interest in pipe making was cemented after meeting and apprenticing under Tom Eltang. The younger Dane became smitten with the artistry and expertise involved in crafting superior smoking instruments, learning invaluable lessons from the elder carver, and soon launched his own career.

This Lovat from Mike is a fine example of his fondness for creating lightweight, compact pieces. It hews pretty closely to the classic English design, with a few Danish design cues also seen. The Billiard bowl cants slightly and presents a hint of supple roundness, while the low-set transition helps emphasize the bowl's height. The shank subtly tapers toward the abbreviated, vulcanite saddle stem, its ebony hues pairing wonderfully with the dark stain of the stummel's rustication. Speaking of the latter, the finish bears a striking resemblance to Tom's signature rustication, with Mike's own stylistic nuances factored in. The younger artisan has graciously been given license by the legendary carver to use the finish in his own creations and appears as pronounced, wavy growth rings do under a sandblast. The gently curvaceous rim and the smooth briar at the shank end wear a smooth, chestnut contrast stain, lending contrast to the remainder of the pipe's dark palette. This is a quite fetching rendition of the Lovat by skillful hands, a testament to Mike's talents as a serious artisan.
