Mike Sebastian Bay: Rusticated Tomato Tobacco Pipe
Product Number: 002-820-0105
Mike Sebastian Bay's pipe-making career began when he contacted Tom Eltang for help in restoring his father's old pipes. The experience led to Bay apprenticing under Eltang, learning the details and artistry of the craft, and now Mike fashions handmade pipes under his own name. This Tomato wonderfully represents the Danish artisan's typical style of compact, lightweight designs, as well as his use of Eltang's signature rustication — a technique he passed on to the younger carver after his apprenticeship. The bowl of this piece is quite plump, fitting nicely in hand, while the round shank stretches out back, flaring at its junction to a comfortably bent vulcanite saddle stem. The aforementioned rustication creates a wealth of texture around the stummel, with a smooth, light rim offering a touch of contrast.
