Mike Sebastian Bay: Smooth Canadian Tobacco Pipe

Product Number: 002-820-0155

Mike Sebastian Bay's journey into the world of pipe making began by chance when, in an effort to find someone who could restore his father's pipes, he came across legendary artisan Tom Eltang. The pair began to talk and, as they did, they bonded, and Eltang took Bay in as an apprentice. There are precious few in the pipe making world who can lay claim to a start as fortunate as this, and Bay is one of them, with Tom teaching him fundamentals and techniques of artisan pipe making. This act of providence gave Bay an incredible amount of practiced skill, and this Canadian is a good example of his shaping style, being a piece that is quintessentially Danish, refined, and deceptively straightforward.

This is a strikingly rare pipe, being one of the scant few Canadians we've ever seen from the artisan, and the only smooth example of the shape he's made that we've come across. The archetypal arrangement of the Canadian's features is reflected in this pipe, though with a sophisticated bit of stylized detail which separates it from other Canadians. The Danish style's overt softness is readily apparent in this composition, specifically with regard to the bowl, as its outline eschews the more cylindrical shaping of Anglo-French Canadians in favor of a more Brandy-like outline. A plump fullness commends the bowl's lower half, with a low-set waistline whose rounded edges not only offer a comfortable feel in hand but which affords the bowl a genteel and supple look that extends through the walls' upward taper to the rim. A wide transition out back leaves plenty of room to drape a digit and has been treated with a subtle cheeking to further emphasize the curves of the bowl, giving way to a lengthy ovoid shank. The soft stylings of the Danish style are present in the build of the shank as well, presenting as an understated rounding at the top and underside which is contrasted by the more crisp-lined flanks as the briar tapers gently toward a black vulcanite stem. Dressed in a warm mahogany stain, the stummel here showcases a wealth of handsome grain, the top and underside both peppered with birdseye while the bowl is wrapped with flame.
