Nikolay Kozyrev: Sandblasted Billiard with Horn
Product Number: 002-773-0024
Almost identical in shape and style to another Billiard we previously received from Nikolay Kozyrev, this rendition from the Russian carver exemplifies his Danish-inspired approach to shaping. Trained by Sergey Ailarov, Nikolay draws from the works of esteemed Danish carvers, like Jess Chonowitsch, Former, and Per and Ulf of S. Bang, to influence his own work. Such influence is evident here both in form and finish. This piece displays a Lovat-like profile, the shank slightly elongated, and the tapered bowl and gently inflated rim are design cues utilized often in Danish pipemaking. The finish contrasts a concise sandblast against the smooth polish of the rim, paired to a rounded mount of horn at the shank end. Kozyrev has dressed it all, then, in a burnt sienna-hued contrast stain — reminiscent of the finishes often seen in the works of fellow Russian carver, Vladimir Grechukhin.-Truett Smith
