Nikolay Kozyrev: Sandblasted Billiard with Horn
Product Number: 002-773-0025
Much like his mentor Sergey Ailarov, Nikolay Kozyrev's pipe making style is heavily informed by the Danish approach, specifically the work of the legendary Jess Chonowitsch. With prior experience in pipe repair, Kozyrev was exposed to the venerable work of S. Bang and Chonowitsch before he became a pipe maker himself, affording him the opportunity to closely study the meticulous details of what made those pipes inherently great. From the shaping, to the finish and all the methodical details that went into those highly-sought after pieces, Nikolay closely examined them all with each piece profoundly impacting his own style.
That influence is readily apparent in this chubby Billiard from the Russian carver as the bowl features some additional plumpness around its low-set waistline before subtly tapering upward towards the gently inflated rim. The lines are supple and smooth throughout, with the transition displaying some extra beefiness before the abbreviated shank takes over. Furthering the Danish aesthetic, Kozyrev has dressed the stummel in a low-profile sandblast with well-defined growth rings still visible underneath the dark stain. What's more, the shank is accented by a creamy piece of horn with its ebony hues complementing the bowl's color, while the medium's lighter tones provide a tasteful hint of contrast. It's a striking piece that's a worthy homage to one of Nikolay's biggest influences and showcases his own skill when it comes to shaping, finishing, and engineering.- Jeffery Sitts
