Nikolay Kozyrev: Smooth Horn with Ivorite Tobacco Pipe

This Horn from Nikolay Kozyrev is reminiscent of the Mushroom shape with its dramatically inflated rim and muscular proportions but retains the seamless curvature that defines the Horn. The shank's gradual flare into the forward-urging bowl is impressive and is remarkably seamless and natural in its execution. Nikolay's skill with gestural, dynamic forms is readily evident in his bent Brandy renditions, but this Horn is a wonderful example of the Russian artisan's shaping acumen.

The shaping and flow of this piece is aesthetically pleasing, especially the consistent undercurve that traverses through the bottom of the shank and heel and travels up the bowl's fore. While that steady undercurve is one of the most appealing aspects of bent pipes, it takes advanced skill to render it properly so that it works in relation to the other elements of the pipe. If it's lumpy or misshapen, it throws everything off and distracts from whatever is done correctly. But thankfully, Nikolay possesses the necessary skills and creative vision to execute such difficult elements. As expected from such talented shaping and artistry, the grain orientation is superb on this composition, with streaks of flame grain rushing up the sides of the canted bowl while whorls of birdseye dances across the domed rim. A pale band of Ivorite lightens the color palette while the stem's soft downturn counterbalances the bowl's canted disposition and offers excellent balance whenever hands-smoking may be desired.
