Pete Prevost: Smooth Acorn with Horn Stem Tobacco Pipe
Product Number: 002-532-0035
After announcing our theme for this year's American Showcase as the art of accent stems in American pipemaking, Pete Prevost called us up to discuss some of the ideas he had for his entry. He wanted to make a pipe with a horn stem, something which, although quite a common feature on briar pipes years ago, Pete himself had never done before. After a bit of playful banter, he decided to go one further and lend the bowl an Acorn shape and accent his horn stem with a darker horn inset, jokingly dubbing it the "Double Horn Acorn".
Whimsical title aside, that playful theme actually resulted in what's possibly one of the most charming and well-executed pieces I've personally handled from the talented American carver: a compact, plump, high-waisted, Sixten-esque Acorn with an active, lively stance in profile and an almost pastoral and organic aesthetic. The horn stem is not only well made and well executed, but that darker piece of horn along the stem's base just ties the entire composition together — serving as a visual buffer of sorts between the warm, vibrant contrast stain of the stummel and the paler shade of the mouthpiece itself. Even if Pete had already made 1,000 horn stems in his career, I'd still say he knocked this one out of the park.
