Pete Prevost: Sandblasted Tomato Tobacco Pipe

Product Number: 002-532-0080

Pete Prevost bought his first pipe at the age of 18, soon thereafter discovering the larger realm of handmade pipes and purchasing a pipe kit which he spent two days shaping into something of his own, finding in this experience a passion for the art of pipe carving. This passion soon evolved into a career, as Prevost learned from some of the top American artisans early on in his development as a pipe maker, eventually moving to Nashville and further honing his craft, later giving up his career as a touring musician to focus solely on carving. His shaping style is marked by pipes that display a tightly-knit muscularity, creating pieces that are both compact and robust.

This Tomato is probably the best example I have ever seen of Pete's aforementioned style, as, despite looking quite large to me when I first saw it, this is one of the smallest pipes I've ever seen. Coming in at just over three and a half inches long and resting the entirety of its build comfortably in the palm, there's an impressive degree of thickness present in the stummel despite the diminutive silhouette here. Much of this thickness is centered at the bowl, which display's the archetypal Tomato build of squat, muscular breadth that's supple and rounded throughout, offering a comfortable feel in hand as its walls arc out of a mid-set waist. Despite its excellent feel in hand, this is a pipe which would be completely at home in a clench, its light weight and expert distribution of that weight ensuring a feathery presence between the teeth. The shank is a short length of briar that lifts slightly out of a wide transition and almost instantly forms a smooth dome that's inlaid with a brass ring: allowing a demurely curved saddle stem of black vulcanite to push-fit into the shank. Dressed in a jet-black sandblast, the stummel here showcases lovely grain, with rippling growth rings cascading down the bowl, while the smooth finish of the shank face adds some contrast.
