Peterson: Pipe of the Year 2019 Smooth P-Lip
Product Number: 002-029-43307
Peterson's 2019 Pipe of the Year celebrates the storied history of one of the marque's most popular and well-loved shapes: the "999." First appearing in Peterson's catalogues in 1937, the original "999" Rhodesian was colloquially named the "John Bull" after the national personification of England; its stout, muscular proportions and inherent masculinity made it an instant classic within the marque's lineup.
During a period of transition in the 1980s, however, the design was replaced with a slightly leaner Rhodesian shape (i.e. the 999 as we know it today), and the John Bull slowly faded from production and the market. That is, until 2018, when Peterson uncovered an unfinished bowl from a classic "John Bull" in storage; as a tribute to the original form of what's now a Peterson icon, they used that vintage stummel as the model for this year's Pipe of the Year design.
Complete with the original form's extra stout walls, muscular shank, broad sterling silver band, and patented P-Lip bit, Peterson's 2019 Pipe of the Year is presented here in a fittingly classic finish: A deep ruby-walnut palette reminiscent of the dark red stains of yesteryear.- Andrew Wike
