Peterson: Silver Cap Flame Grain (338) Fishtail
Product Number: 002-029-45436
Peterson's iconic shaping style is often described as "tubular" and muscular, and the Irish marque's "338" bent Billiard does well to exemplify this convention — being the same design as the "313" but outside of the System series. The bowl rises tall and upright, posing a cylindrical, tube-like disposition, while the shank and transition retain the aforementioned hearty and robust proportions. That said, the overall length remains quite compact, and the sinuous bend provides a comfortable clenching posture — the gesture of the stem and curling heel calling to mind the profile of the iconic "05" shape but without the bowl's flare at the rim.
Peterson's esteemed Flame Grain series consists of pipes crafted from select quality briar, carefully chosen for their choice grain orientation. The designation represents one of Peterson's highest grades, and in this example the lively array of grain is brought out by a smoky, black walnut contrast stain. The finish draws attention to the silver cap and accent band, fashioned by the Sallynoggin factory's expert silversmiths, each one having spent years of mentorship underneath Peterson's senior craftsmen. The metal provides a formal, austere presentation, and the cap also protects the rim from charring, making for a pipe that's as eye-catching as it is practical.-Truett Smith
