Peterson: Flame Grain Spigot (65) Fishtail
Product Number: 002-029-48783
In terms of overall scale, Peterson's "65" bent Billiard is one of the Irish marque's smaller bent Billiard renditions, especially when compared to the likes of their "XL90" and "X220." While in a smaller package, however, the "65" still features Peterson's signature sense of proportions — the transition, shank, and stem base all quite robust in relation to the rest of the piece. This design cue separates the Irish aesthetic from that of the French and English pipe making approach, with the "65" towing the line in its compact form but substantial presence. It's the perfect option for those who want the best of both worlds.
Peterson's esteemed Flame Grain series consists of pipes crafted from select quality briar, carefully chosen for their choice grain orientation. The designation represents one of Peterson's highest grades, and in this example the lively array of grain is brought out by a smoky, black walnut contrast stain. This particular example is made all the more striking in the Spigot rendition — featuring the Irish marque's superlative silver work at the shank end and push style tenon. These fitments not only provide flashy accenting touches, but they also have added practicality: the spigot mount arrangement adding durability and enabling stem removal while the pipe is still hot. It all combines for a striking, austere aesthetic and is a perfect example of one of Peterson's higher-tiered offerings.-Truett Smith
