Peterson: Pipe of the Year 2020 Supreme P-Lip
Product Number: 002-029-52998
Peterson's annual, limited-edition Pipe of the Year series dates back to 1997, and each release features a new, singular shape inspired by or revived from the Irish marque's vast archives. Paying homage once again to its origins, Peterson has resurrected an iconic and historic shape for their 2020 Pipe of the Year: the "9BC." It's a hearty bent Billiard — a variant of Peterson's original Patent design — and one that's been beloved for decades by collectors for its muscular proportions encased in a smoothly curving silhouette. Being an older Peterson shape, the nomenclature of the "9BC" is curious compared to the Irish firm's current shape chart, and the stamping follows some of Peterson's earliest shape-naming conventions: "9" denotes the bowl shape; "B" refers to the tapered stem; and "C" corresponds to the shortened stem length.
Though a discontinued shape, design elements of the "9BC" have carried over into Peterson's current portfolio, with the "XL90" in particular sharing similarities with the "9BC." The 2020 Pipe of the Year returns to the design's original form; however, like the modern "XL90," this version forgoes System engineering — perfect for those who enjoy Peterson's distinctly antique aesthetic but prefer non-System smoking. The vulcanite stem, though, does feature the patented P-Lip mouthpiece as a tribute to the vintage shape's heritage. This pipe is lastly topped off by a broad band of sterling silver, evidence of the factory's skilled silversmiths and also a defining aspect of Peterson's historic identity. The regal accoutrement draws handsome contrast against this rendition's smooth, honey-blonde stain for an unforgettable presentation. Such a shape and finish-and-accent combination make this 2020 Pipe of the Year not only a fitting tribute to the marque's legacy but also an illustration of Peterson's singular ability to drive innovation through tradition, transporting once beloved shapes onto the modern stage to be enjoyed by a new generation.
When fashioning new pipes, Peterson separates stummels into various grades, differentiating between degrees of quality and grain orientation. For decades, the Supreme grade reigned, well, supreme, being the pinnacle of Peterson's production. However, throughout the '00s, the prestigious designation began to fall out of use. That all changed, though, in 2019 with Peterson resurrecting the superlative Supreme stamp, followed by the A+ and A grades, respectively. Out of 2,000 stummels, only one will be of Supreme quality and perfection, making the line truly the best, most exclusive offering from the Irish firm. Dressed in a honey-blonde stain for best grain definition, this piece's patterns are on full, natural display, and it joins the ranks of Peterson's best pipes, bar none.-Truett Smith
