Peterson: Kapp Royal Barrel Fishtail
Product Number: 002-029-54443
In Peterson's 1945 catalog, the Irish marque introduced four Specialty shapes: the Barrel, Tankard, Calabash, and Belgique. The line forgoes Peterson's conventional stamping and shaping cues. Each design receives a name rather than a shape number, and the whole lineup is united by a slender, petite disposition — a stark contrast to the robust, muscular aesthetic that dominates the Irish firm's portfolio. These are the smallest, most lightweight designs Peterson has to offer, and they've been popular favorites over the past 70+ years, with many pipesmokers devoting them to flake tobaccos. Presented here is the rotund Barrel shape which, like the Tankard, is a take on the sturdy-sitting Poker design but one with a more streamlined shank and stem and a rounded bowl reminiscent of its namesake.
Like the Rosslare lines, Peterson's Kapp Royal series pairs the Irish marque's popular shapes with sterling silver mounts and stems of vivid, amber-hued acrylic. It's a throwback to a 1960's and 1970's series and pays homage to the Kapp family, émigrés from Germany who opened a pipe shop in Dublin in 1874 and for whom Latvian immigrant Charles Peterson worked as a craftsman. Through this partnership was born Kapp & Peterson — now known and beloved across the pipe smoking world as simply Peterson. The Kapp Royal line is marked by a smooth, mahogany finish, Peterson's signature, in-house silverwork, and sunny stems to emulate the vintage look of amber, making for a bright and striking aesthetic.-Truett Smith
