Peterson: Natural Amber Stem Spigot (80s)
Product Number: 002-029-54748
Peterson's "80s" is a muscular take on the classic bent Bulldog, featuring the Irish marque's penchant for robust, stout proportions with its thick, sturdy shank bearing almost as much visual weight as the bowl. In a way, it's a diamond-shanked companion to the Irish marque's signature "999" Rhodesian, both designs featuring a squat bowl, the same low-slung disposition, and a set of beadlines around their tapered rims just above the tight transition. The "80s" also serves as a bent alternative to Peterson's "150" straight Bulldog for smokers who prefer a downturned stem for easy clenching, yet prefer the masculine look and feel of such a timeless design and the iconic Peterson aesthetic.
Along with their signature shaping style, Peterson of Dublin is renowned for their silverwork. The journey of becoming a Peterson silversmith requires years of training and personal mentorship from the factory's senior craftsmen, and the superlative results testify to such a demanding, lengthy process — each worker having engineered his own mandrel to the extent that every metal accoutrement made is imprinted with the subtle, personal style of the one who machined it. Peterson's Spigot line best showcases the Irish marque's signature silver treatment, fitting sterling silver around both the shank end and stem base in a spigot mount arrangement. The construction provides further reinforcement and durability and highlights even more sterling silver than would be used for a standard military mount. Presented here in the Natural Spigot finish, the flashy, regal metal is complemented by a vibrant, honey blonde stain and fitted to a mouthpiece of genuine amber (as well as a more durable, travel-friendly one of jet-black acrylic).
Note: Genuine amber stems were characteristic of some of the earliest briar pipes, dating back to the 1800s, and they're more delicate than other mouthpiece materials. Take care when removing the stem, and remove by gripping the silver tenon rather than the actual amber itself. Also, while thinner, regular pipe cleaners will work fine, avoid extra fluffy or bristled cleaners, as they might damage the amber. When cleaning use only a small amount of alcohol if needed, do not buff, soak, or clean the amber stem with anything abrasive. We also recommend avoiding clenching or holding these pipes in your teeth, again to prevent damage to the vintage amber. As with vulcanite, amber stems also should not be left in direct sunlight.-Jeffery Sitts
