Peterson: Sherlock Holmes PSB Lestrade P-Lip Tobacco Pipe
Product Number: 002-029-63858
The Lestrade of Peterson's iconic Sherlock Holmes collection is named after the energetic Scotland Yard inspector G. Lestrade, a highly respected member of the famous force and one of the best — mainly because Sherlock allowed him to take credit for successful deductions he made in cases. However, Lestrade was well-established in his own right, quickly rising through the ranks over the years thanks to his professionalism. In Peterson's homage, the Lestrade, also known as the "XL23," takes the form of a full-bodied, deeply bent Apple. It's highly reminiscent of the marque's "XL02," with its muscularity and thick transition highlighting the determination and resilience of the famed detective. The full bend makes the bulbous bowl easily manageable when clenching the pipe, while said bowl also fills the palm effortlessly with its plump proportions.
Peterson introduced the Sherlock Holmes series in 1987 with a one-off design commemorating the 100th anniversary of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's A Study in Scarlet. Two years later, the Irish marque decided to add a new shape every six months, forming what would eventually become the 18-pipe Sherlock Holmes collection. Each pipe in the collection also showcases Peterson's exemplary silverwork — the firm being renowned for its application of sterling silver, with the Sallynoggin factory's smiths having completed a years-long mentorship stewarded by Peterson's senior craftsmen. The Sherlock Holmes line boasts broad accent bands of the regal metal, etched with the collection's logo, contrasted here against a dark chocolate-stained sandblast for a traditional appeal and just the right amount of texture to complement the reserved aesthetic.
In 2019, Peterson overhauled its sandblasting process by adopting a more intimate, artisan-style setup that now allows the marque's craftsmen to sandblast pipes individually and with more control. This new process yielded such exceptional results that Peterson created a special stamp to further distinguish pipes that showed especially choice, grain-defining sandblasts: the Premium Sandblast, or PSB, grade. While the Supreme is still the highest designation for Peterson's sandblasted pipes, the PSB stamp denotes sandblasted bowls of exceptional quality and character and remains a rare honor in its own right, with only 1% of Peterson's regular production pipes earning the designation. This is truly a special piece and represents Peterson's new standard for the sandblasted pipe.-Jeffery Sitts
