Peterson: Sherlock Holmes Dark Smooth Rathbone P-Lip

Product Number: 002-029-65642

Named after renowned English actor Basil Rathbone, who played Sherlock Holmes in 14 films from 1939 to 1946, Peterson's "Rathbone" displays a memorable profile with its poised, towering bowl and curvaceous transition. Also known as the "XL20," this bent Billiard bears a striking resemblance to the swan-neck style of pipe that was often seen clenched between Rathbone's teeth in his Sherlock portrayals. This rendition also does an excellent job of maintaining the Irish marque's tubular shaping cues, making it a very practical shape for the hand, while also boasting a Stack-like depth to its chamber.

Peterson introduced the Sherlock Holmes series in 1987 with a one-off design commemorating the 100th anniversary of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's A Study in Scarlet. Two years later, the Irish marque decided to add a new shape every six months, forming what would eventually become the 18-pipe Sherlock Holmes collection. Each pipe in the collection also showcases Peterson's exemplary silverwork — the firm being renowned for its application of sterling silver, with the Sallynoggin factory's smiths having completed a years-long mentorship stewarded by Peterson's senior craftsmen. The Sherlock Holmes line boasts broad accent bands of the regal metal, etched with the collection's logo, contrasted here against a smoky contrast stain to accentuate the briar's gorgeous grain.
