Peterson: Sherlock Holmes Rusticated Junior Baskerville P-Lip Tobacco Pipe

Product Number: 002-029-73741

The Hound of the Baskervilles is one of the most celebrated of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's Sherlock Holmes stories. The tale follows the detective as he's hired to help prevent the death of the Baskerville heir, Sir Henry, the family having allegedly been haunted for generations by a demonic, murdering hound. The novel was originally serialized in The Strand Magazine from 1901 to 1902 and revived Sherlock after Doyle had intended to retire the character in 1893's The Final Problem. In the same way that the titular novel continued the story of Holmes, the Baskerville expanded Peterson's Sherlock Holmes Collection, having been introduced in 1989, two years after the Original's release. Also dubbed the "XL12," the Baskerville is a deeply bent Rhodesian that exemplifies the robust style seen throughout the Collection and the muscular aesthetic for which Peterson is known.

Peterson of Dublin and Sherlock Holmes have enjoyed an inextricable association ever since Basil Rathbone first picked up a Peterson pipe on the silver screen. Rathbone's 14-film portrayal of the intrepid detective lasted from 1939 to 1946, and Peterson's Sherlock Holmes collection has honored that relationship since 1987. Peterson introduced the series with a one-off design commemorating the 100th anniversary of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's A Study in Scarlet, with more shapes released throughout the subsequent years, and the line has become a staple across the Irish marque's portfolio. Even rarer and more collectible, though, are Peterson's Junior renditions of the Sherlock Holmes line's iconic shapes. Initially released in 1988, Sherlock Holmes Junior pipes maintained the same recognizable design cues and relative proportions as Peterson's standard renditions, only reduced to a slightly smaller overall scale. The majority of their production, though, was halted after 1993; however, a few examples were found at the Sallynoggin factory years later, and Peterson revitalized a select few Sherlock Holmes Junior shapes in a limited-edition release after nearly a 30-year hiatus. Like standard Sherlock Holmes pipes, each Junior rendition showcases Peterson's exemplary silverwork in the form of a broad accent band etched with the collection's logo, contrasting here against this particular example's rugged, chocolate-stained rustication.
