Peterson: Jekyll & Hyde (338) Fishtail Tobacco Pipe
Product Number: 002-029-79618
Peterson's iconic shaping style is often described as "tubular" and muscular, and the Irish marque's "338" bent Billiard does well to exemplify this convention — being the same design as the "313" but outside of the System series. The bowl rises tall and upright, posing a cylindrical, tube-like disposition, while the shank and transition retain the aforementioned hearty and robust proportions. That said, the overall length remains quite compact, and the sinuous bend provides a comfortable clenching posture — the gesture of the stem and curling heel calling to mind the profile of the iconic "05" shape but without the bowl's flare at the rim.
Succeeding 2012's introduction of the popular Dracula line, Peterson released the Jekyll & Hyde in 2015, paying homage to yet another piece of classic literature. The series draws inspiration from Scottish author Robert Louis Stevenson's 1886 gothic novella Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde. The story follows Gabriel John Utterson, a London lawyer, and his investigation of Dr. Henry Jekyll and the mysteriously nefarious Edward Hyde. Spoiler alert: Both Jekyll and Hyde are the same person, the doctor having created a serum intended to dampen the dark side of his personality, but the potion accidentally transforms him into Mr. Hyde, the cruel personification of his inner evil. Like Jekyll's dual personalities, Peterson's Jekyll & Hyde series features two distinct finishes — a smooth, well-kept, ruby-tinged stain adorns the Dr. Jekyll side, while the craggy, dark-stained rustication of the other symbolizes the malevolent Mr. Hyde.-Truett Smith
